Various Small Fires and Jessica Silverman are pleased to present Tangerine Dreams, a group exhibition bringing together new work by Dashiell Manley, Hayal Pozanti, and Davina Semo. Drawing inspiration from the optimism that arises from the symbolism of Tangerines, hues of orange and red throughout the exhibition reverberate feelings of warmth, radiating energy and vitality. Employing unique modes of abstraction, the works on view each consider themes of time, language, and our lived environment to imagine a more fruitful, abundant future.
Dashiell Manley’s paintings emerged as an exploration of abstract landscapes, connected by the subtle, at times almost imperceptible, appearance of a horizon line that bisects the canvas at their midpoint and defines the bounds between earth and atmosphere. The newest works for VSF have energy that moves in one direction and then becomes interrupted by a new energy moving it in a different direction.
Referring to her new paintings as ‘visual poetry,’ over the last year, painting has become a means for Hayal Pozanti to practice being in the present moment, a tool to process emotions and reflect on the inner self thus, leading to works that are more colorful, gestural and intuitive.
For VSF Davina Semo has made a new cast-bronze Bell whose painted blue surface holds the history of the wax from which it is cast. The hanging bronze clapper invites viewers to ring the bell. On the wall is one of Semo’s Bearing pieces, which consist of warped acrylic mirrors shot through with constellations of radial ball bearings. Reflecting the viewer and the other artworks in the show, these pieces offer curatorial comment, drawing attention to and even coloring the conversation between the works.

Dashiell Manley (b.1983, Fontana, CA) has a BFA from CalArts and an MFA from UCLA. Manley’s work has been featured in international exhibitions, including the Hammer Museum’s 2012 “Made in L.A.” and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Public collections include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, The Palm Springs Art Museum, and The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College. In 2017, he enjoyed a solo exhibition at Stanford’s Cantor Center. He lives and works in Los Angeles. He is represented by Jessica Silverman.
Hayal Pozanti (b. 1983, Istanbul, Turkey) has a BA from Sabanci University and an MFA from Yale University. She has been awarded large-scale public projects and commissions by the New York Public Library; Public Art Fund, New Yorkand Cleveland Clinic and Case Western, Cleveland. Her work is in the permanent collections of: Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum; JP Morgan Chase Art Collection; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); New York Presbyterian Hospital; San Jose Museum of Art; Stanford Hospital; and UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, Hammer Museum. Pozanti lives and works in Manchester, Vermont. She is represented by Jessica Silverman.
Davina Semo (b. 1981, Washington DC) has a BA in Visual Arts and Creative Writing from Brown University and an MFA from University of California, San Diego. In 2021, the artist’s work was exhibited at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1 in the solo installation Reverberation commissioned by Public Art Fund. Semo recently enjoyed the solo show Core Reflections at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Napa. Her work is currently on view at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive’s “New Time: Art and Feminisms in the 21st Century,” a major survey exploring recent feminist practices in contemporary art. Semo lives and works in Los Angeles. She is represented by Jessica Silverman.

베리어스 스몰 파이어스와 제시카 실버맨은 <귤빛 꿈들>이라는 제목으로 다시엘 맨리, 하얄 포잔티, 다비나 세모 단체전을 소개한다. 귤의 상징성에서 비롯된 낙관주의에서 영감 받아 전시 전반에 오렌지와 붉은 빛 색조는 따뜻함, 에너지, 활력을 발산한다. 각 작품은 독특한 추상화 방식을 사용해 시간, 언어, 우리가 살고 있는 환경을 주제로 보다 풍요롭고 풍부한 미래를 그린다.
다시엘 맨리의 회화는 캔버스 중간에서 양분되어 지구와 대기 사이 경계를 정의하는 미묘하고 거의 감지할 수 없는 수평선으로 연결된 추상적 풍경의 탐구로 나타난다. VSF에서 선보이는 신작은 한 방향으로 움직이다 새로운 에너지에 의해 방해받고 다른 방향으로 바뀌는 기운을 가지고 있다.
자신의 신작을 ‘시각적 시’라고 부르며, 하얄 포잔티에게 회화는 지난 한 해 동안 현재 순간을 실천하는 수단이자 감정을 처리하고 내면의 자아를 성찰하는 도구가 되어 더 다채롭고, 몸짓적, 직관적인 작업으로 이어진다.
디비나 세모는 주조의 왁스 역사가 담긴 표면의 푸른색 청동 “종”을 제작했다. 매달린 청동 추는 관객에게 종을 울리도록 유도한다. 벽에 설치된 세모의 작업은 “베어링” 작업 중 하나이며, 이는 방사형 볼 베어링이 별자리처럼 박혀 있는 뒤틀린 아크릴 거울로 구성되어 있다. 관객과 전시장의 다른 작품들을 비추는 세모의 작품은 큐레토리얼 논평을 제시하여 작품들과의 대화에 관심을 기울이며 색칠하기까지 한다.

다시엘 맨리 (1983년 캘리포니아 폰타나 출생) 은 칼아츠 학사, UCLA 석사를 취득했다. 맨리의 작업은 2012년 해머 미술관에서 열린 , 2014년 휘트니 비엔날레를 비롯해 여러 해외 전시에 소개되었다. 그의 작품은 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관, 해머 미술관, 팜 스프링스 미술관, 포모나 칼리지의 벤튼 미술관 등에 영구 소장되어 있다. 작가는 로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 작업한다.
하얄 포잔티 (1983년 터키 이스탄불 출생) 사반치 대학교 학사, 예일대학교 석사를 취득했다. 그녀는 뉴욕 공립도서관 커미션, 뉴욕 공공 미술 펀드, 클리브랜드 클리닉, 클리브랜드 케이스 웨스턴과 같은 대규모 공공 프로젝트 커미션을 받았다. 그녀의 작업은 브로드 미술관, JP 모건 체이스 미술 컬렉션, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관, 뉴욕 장로교 병원, 산호세 미술관, 스탠포드 병원, UCLA 그룬왈드 회화예술센터, 해머 미술관에 영구 소장되어 있다. 포잔티는 버몬트 주 맨체스터에서 거주하며 작업한다.
다비나 세모 (1981년 워싱턴 DC 출생) 은 브라운 대학교 시각 예술 및 문예 창작과 학사, 캘리포니아 대학교 샌디에고 캠퍼스에서 석사를 취득했다. 2021년 작가는 브루클린 다리 공원 에서 공공 미술 펀드를 받아 을 전시했다. 세모는 최근 캘리포니아 나파 디 로사 현대미술센터에서 개인전 를 열었다. 그녀의 작품은 최근 버클리 미술관과 퍼시픽 필름보관소의 “새로운 시대 : 21세기 예술과 페미니즘”에 전시되었다. 세모는 로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 작업한다.
