Various Small Fires is pleased to present, Next of Kin, the exhibition debut of six American artists in Seoul, South Korea. In the unsettling ups and downs of the current COVID-19 crisis, VSF has taken the opportunity this summer to focus on a universal constant: family.
Pushing beyond its biological definition, the artists capture members of their families, chosen tribes, and imagined ancestors in intimate portraits that reflect an unprecedented era of shifting priorities with an insistence on intimacy and tenderness. During the lockdown, Gina Beavers, Diedrick Brackens, Jessie Homer French, Chase Hall, Cindy Ji Hye Kim, and Calida Rawles contemplate the figures at the core of their social disruption.
In nuclear lovers, two figures (one being Brackens) affectionately sprawl across an abstracted textile matrix that was inspired by Brackens’ own bedding, hands reaching for one another in their longing for touch.
Inspired by makeup tutorials by Korean cosmetic YouTube star, Dain Yoon, Beavers’ newest painting of mascara-laden eyes, 16 Step Smoky Eye, unfolds as a portrait of desire and self-improvement in the digital age of self-isolation.
Rawles captures a friend gliding across the water’s surface in her photorealistic painting, New Day Coming. Headless in an enchanting reverie of bubbles, ripples and kaleidoscopic abstractions, the portrait is both calming and unnerving – celebrating the powerful resilience of the black female body while alluding to the danger and duplexity of a world above and below the water’s surface.
A vintage car is piled high with friends in swimsuits and surfboards hanging out of the trunk. A beach scene by Hall, who has surfed along the California coast throughout his adolescence, depicts the joy and camaraderie of a favorite pastime. Yet as its title suggests, All my brothers go to heavens, the painting also underscores the underlying fear behind every African American outing in an increasingly violent and prejudiced modern day America.
French portrays her closest fly-fishing companion in Magical Realism on the Cowichan, guiding her through the Cowichan River in British Columbia on their yearly fishing retreat. Sunday at Rensselaerville Falls depicts a picturesque family picnic with members enjoying various activities in upstate New York where Homer resided as a child.
Twisting through a building scaffold, a common view outside one’s window in New York, Kim’s Character #18 embodies a visual metaphor of her mother tongue, the Korean language, as the figurative character’s limbs intersect like that of a Hangul “character” of layered consonants and vowels.

Gina Beavers (b. 1978 in Athens, Greece, lives and works in New York) received a BA of Anthropology at the University of Virginia, a MFA in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a MS in Education from Brooklyn College. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions including MoMA PS1, New York; GNYP Gallery, Berlin; Michael Benevento, Los Angeles, California; Carl Kostyal, London, UK; Clifton Benevento, New York, New York; and Fourteen30 Contemporary, Portland. The artist will present her first solo presentation with Various Small Fires in Seoul this fall.
Diedrick Brackens (b. 1989, Mexia, Texas, lives and works in Los Angeles, California) received a BFA from University of North Texas and a MFA in textiles from California College of the Arts. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at New Museum, New York; Various Small Fires, Los Angeles; Sewanee University Art Gallery; Ulrich Museum of Art; and Johansson Projects. Recent group exhibitions include Made in L.A. 2018, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; California African American Museum; Jewish Contemporary Art Museum, San Francisco; Dimensions Variable, Miami; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York; and Denny Gallery, New York. Brackens is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Brooklyn Museum; Museum of Fine Art, Houston; New Orleans Museum of Art; and the Oakland Museum of California.
Jessie Homer French (b. 1940, New York, New York, lives and works in Mountain Center, California) has held solo exhibitions including Independent New York; Mother’s Tankstation, Dublin and London; Art Basel Hong Kong; Various Small Fires, Los Angeles; the Armory Center for the Arts, California; Craig Krull Gallery, California; Winchester Gallery, British Columbia; and Ankrum Gallery, Los Angeles. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as the Palm Springs Museum, California; Laguna Art Museum, California; and at Samuel Freeman Gallery, California. French’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Palm Spring Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Chase Hall (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota; lives and works in Los Angeles, California) attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Maine. Hall has exhibited at the ICA LA, Los Angeles; Depart Foundation, Los Angeles; Jenkins Johnson Projects, New York; LTD, Los Angeles; Museo Nacional De San Carlos, Mexico City; Barbara Feinman Gallery, San Francisco; Cob Gallery, London; and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Hall has held residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Florida; The Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles; The Macedonia Institute, New York; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
Cindy Ji Hye Kim (b. 1990, Incheon, South Korea; lives and works in New York) received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA from the Yale University School of Art. Solo exhibitions include Helena Anrather and Foxy Production, New York, New York; François Ghebaly, Los Angeles, California; Interstate Projects, Brooklyn, New York; Cooper Cole, Toronto, Ontario; Helena Anrather, New York. Calida Rawles (b.1976, Wilmington, Delaware, lives and works in Los Angeles, California) received a BA at Spelman College, Atlanta, and a MA at New York University. She has held solo exhibitions at Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, and Frieze Los Angeles. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Fullerton College Art Gallery, California; LACMA Inglewood Art + Film Lab; the San Francisco Arts Commission; Walter Maciel Gallery, Los Angeles; Papillon Art, Los Angeles; and Rush Arts Gallery, New York. Rawles’ work is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

가족이라는 생물학적 정의를 뛰어넘어 예술가들은 친밀함과 애정에 대한 고집과 전례 없는 우선순위 변화의 시대를 반영해 가족 구성원, 그들이 선택한 동료들, 그리고 상상 속 조상들을 친밀한 초상화로 담아냈다. 집에서 나오지 못하는 미국의 현 상황에서 지나 비버스, 디드릭 브라켄스, 제시 호머 프렌치, 체이스 홀, 신디 지혜 김, 그리고 칼리다 라울스는 사회적 혼란 속 핵심 인물들을 고려한다.
브라켄스의 는 작가 자신의 침구에서 영향받아, 추상화된 섬유망에 두 인물 (이 중 한 인물은 본인)은 정답게 널브러져 서로의 손길이 닿기를 갈망하며 손을 뻗는다.
비버스의 신작 <16 Step Smoky Eye>는 한국 메이크업 일러스트레이터 윤다인과 같은 뷰티 유튜버 영향을 받아 디지털 시대 자아의 욕망과 자기 성찰의 궁극적인 반복의 공간을 펼친다.
라울스의 사실적인 회화 에서는 친한 친구가 수면 위를 미끄러지듯 지나가는 모습을 포착한다. 거품, 잔물결, 변화무쌍한 추상의 매혹적인 몽상 속에서 얼굴이 보이지 않는 이 초상화는 진정성과 불안감을 동시에 지닌다. 흑인 여성 몸의 강렬한 탄력성을 기리는 동시에 수면 위아래 세계의 위험성과 이중성을 암시한다.
빈티지 자동차 위 수영복을 입은 다수의 친구가 걸터앉아 있고 서프보드들은 트렁크 뒤로 튀어 나와 있다. 청소년기 내내 캘리포니아 해안을 따라 서핑을 즐겼던 홀의 해변 풍경은 엄청난 기쁨과 동지애를 담는다. 그러나 라는 제목에서 알 수 있듯, 점점 더 폭력적이고 편견이 심해지는 현대 미국 사회 내에 모든 흑인이 겪는 근본적인 두려움을 강조한다.
프렌치는 에서 매년 플라이 낚시하러 휴양지인 브리티시 컬럼비아의 코위찬 강을 안내하는 그녀의 절친한 친구를 묘사한다. 에서 프렌치는 어렸을 때 살았던 뉴욕 북부에서 가족이 다양한 활동을 즐긴 소풍을 그린다.
뉴욕 창밖에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 건물 비계를 뒤틀며, 에 등장한 인물의 신체는 신디 지혜 김의 모국어인 한글 자음과 모음을 문자처럼 교차한 모습을 형상화해 한글의 시각적 은유를 구현한다.

지나 비버스 (1978년 그리스 아테네 태생)는 버지니아 대학교에서 인류학 학사, 시카고 아트 인스티튜트에서 회화와 드로잉 석사와 뉴욕 브루클린 컬리지에서 교육학 석사 학위를 받았다. 그녀는 뉴욕 현대미술관 PS1, 베를린 GNUP 갤러리, 로스앤젤레스 마이클 베네벤토, 런던 칼 코스탈에서 개인전을 했다. 또한, 밀라노 지오 마르초니, 뉴욕 폭시 프로덕션, 스톡홀름 로열 갤러리, 뉴욕 개빈 브라운, 뉴욕현대미술관 PS1에서 단체전을 가졌다. 작가는 뉴욕에서 거주하며 작업한다. 이번 가을, 비버스는 VSF 서울에서 아시아 첫 개인전을 가질 예정이다.

제시 호머 프렌치 (1940년 뉴욕 태생)는 인디펜던트 뉴욕, 더블린 마더스 탱크 스테이션, 아트 바젤 홍콩, 파사데나 아모리 센터브 오브 아츠 등 개인전을 개최했다. 그녀의 작품은 팜 스프링 미술관, 라구나 미술관, 새뮤얼 프리먼 갤러리 단체전에 포함되기도 했다. 프렌치의 작품은 팜 스프링 미술관, 스미스소니언 미술관에 영구소장 되어있다. 작가는 캘리포니아주 마운틴 센터에서 거주하며 작업한다.
체이스 홀 (1993년 미네소타주 세인트 폴 태생)은 스코히건 회화조각학교 출신이다. 홀은 로스앤젤레스 ICA, 디파트 파운데이션, 뉴욕 젠킨스 존슨 프로젝트, 멕시코 시티 사스 카를로스 미술관, 샌프란시스코 바바라 페이먼 갤러리, 런던 콥 갤러리 그리고 아일랜드 현대미술관에서 전시했다. 그는 플로리다 애틀랜틱 센터, 로스앤젤레스 더 마운틴 스쿨 오브 아츠, 뉴욕 더 마케도니아 인스티튜트, 아일랜드 현대미술관 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했다. 작가는 뉴욕과 로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 작업한다.
신디 지혜 김 (1990년 인천 태생)은 로드아일랜드 스쿨 오브 디자인 학사와 예일대학교 미술대학 석사를 졸업했다. 뉴욕 폭시 프로덕션, 로스앤젤레스 프랑스와 기발리, 인터스테이트 프로젝트 등 개인전을 열었다. 그리고 상하이 안테나 스페이스, 토론토 요크대학교 미술관, 바하마스 비엔날레에 단체전에 참여했다. 그녀의 작품은 시카고대학교과 마주디아 컬렉션에 영구소장되어 있다. 작가는 뉴욕에서 거주하며 작업한다. 내년에 VSF 서울에서 개인전을 가질 예정이다.
