Various Small Fires is pleased to present Arms Of The Sea in collaboration with C L E A R I N G New York / Brussels / Beverly Hills in its Seoul location. The exhibition by Harold Ancart, Sebastian Black and Loïc Raguénès, is proposed through three axes of work that explore liquidity, rhythm, and magnitude.
Abstraction is central to the exhibition, which works in a similar course as water. As transparent as it is, when accumulated in large quantities, it acquires a mysterious – tenebrous at times – darkness, that doesn’t allow one to see through it all. At first glance, an answer is given to us, but the deeper we dive into the works, the less we know and we open ourselves to interpretation through sensation over rationality.
The same unease awakens due to the lack of information presented on Sebastian Black’s thermal-camera paintings, where the works points at itself as the topic, but the titles give away clues proposed by the artist. Yellow gesture and My Second Selfie were created by using a thermal recognition gadget for iPhone, allowing a digital being to take aesthetic decisions over the artist’s desires. Devoid bodies of water with a loose application of color blocks are presented on Harold Ancart’s sculptures. By removing the liquid, the artwork becomes a pure study of shape and color: a speculative examination of pools, their use and architecture. In the end, once seen up close, any painting becomes just that, a material on a canvas, texture and shade.
In Loïc Raguénès landscapes, the melodic current is interrupted by the emergence of the Sun, in what appears to be a game between background and foreground. Through Raguénès delicate brush strokes, Très Lent [Very Slow] sets a tempo that can also be read as something that is opposite to its title – it actually feels like it is running at a high speed. Not unlike Han River, where quietness is only apparent.

Harold Ancart (b. 1980 in Brussels, Belgium) lives and works in New York. Sebastian Black (b. 1985 in New York, USA) lives and works in New York. He received his MFA from Columbia University in 2012. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at CCA Andratx, Mallorca; Hauser & Wirth, New York; Marlborough Gallery, New York; Broadway Gallery, New York; and Rachel Uffner, New York; and Proyectomonclova, Mexico City. Next month he will be included in a group exhibitions at Various Small Fires, Seoul; and Gana Art, Seoul. Loïc Raguénès (b. 1968 in Besançon, France) lives and works in Douarnenez, France. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at Musée des Beaux Arts, Dole; Musée François Pompon, Saulieu; Circuit, Lausanne; Galeria Zero, Milan; and C L E A R I N G New York / Brussels. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at Le Consortium, Dijon; de Appel, Amsterdam; Musée des Beaux Arts de Rennes; Villa Arson, Nice; CAN, Neuchâtel; Casino Luxembourg; FRAC Ile de France, Paris and FRAC Aquitaine, Bordeaux; and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg. <바다의 무기>는 베리어스 스몰 파이어스와 클리어링 뉴욕 / 브뤼셀 / 베벌리 힐스의 두 갤러리의 콜라보레이션 전시이다. 해롤드 안카르트, 세바스찬 블랙, 로익 라구에네의 전시회는 유동성, 리듬, 규모를 탐구하는 세 가지 작업 축을 소개한다.
추상은 이 전시에 중심으로, 물과 유사한 흐름을 보인다. 투명하면서도 많은 양의 물이 모이면 신비로운 어둠을 만들고 이 속을 우리가 꿰뚫어 볼 수 없어 때로는 음침함을 느낄 수 있다. 언뜻보기에 우리에게 답은 주어져 있지만, 작품에 깊이 빠져 들고 덜 알수록 합리성에 대한 감각을 통한 해석이 열린다.
세바스찬 블랙의 열화상 카메라 그림들에 제시된 정보가 부족하기 때문에 똑같은 불안이 일어난다. 작품 그 자체를 주제로 삼지만 제목은 작가가 제안한 단서를 나눠준다. 와 두 점은 아이폰용 열인식 도구를 사용해 제작됐고, 디지털 존재가 작가의 욕구들보다 미적 결정을 내릴 수 있도록 한다. 해롤드 안카르트 조각들에서는 느슨하게 적용된 색상 블록과 물이 없는 수역을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 물기를 제거함으로써 작품은 형태와 색상에 대한 순수한 연구로 수영장의 사용과 건축적 추측에 근거한 조사이다. 가까이에서 보면 어느 회화도 결국 캔버스의 소재, 질감, 음영이 된다.
로익 라궤네스의 풍경에서 선율의 흐름은 배경과 전경 사이 게임처럼 보이는데 태양의 출현에 의해 가로막힌다. 라궤네스의 섬세한 붓질을 통해 라는 제목과 반대 속도로 읽을 수 있게 설정되었다. 작품은 실제로 고속도로를 달리는 것처럼 느껴진다. 고요함만 드러내는 한강과는 다르다.
